Astronomy

geeking out and going deeeeep!

I’ve been into astronomy since the late-90s. I became interested after taking an astronomy class as an elective in college. I instantly became hooked, and I joined the Peoria Astronomical Society. There I learned to hunt and find deep space objects. I focused on visual astronomy, eventually graduating to a 15" Obsession dobsonian light-bucket!

In early 2025, I finally bit the bullet and went all in on astrophotography. I purchased a complete AP setup from someone leaving the hobby (probably due to the extreme finances it requires! 🤣)

My astrophotography kit contains:

  • William Optics GT71 apo refractor, f5.9
  • W.O. 0.8x flattener/reducer yielding f4.7
  • W.O. 120mm guide scope
  • ZWO 183MC Pro CMOS camera
  • ZWO ASI 120 mini guide camera
  • ZWO ASI Air plus telescope and camera controller
  • Sky Watcher HEQ5 pro EQ mount
  • Optolong L-Enhance nebula filter

The ASI Air is a nice bit of kit, allowing full goto telescope and camera control wirelessly, so I can stay nice and warm inside while imaging 😄

Im still very much an amateur at capturing and processing, but you can view my latest images on my Instagram Astronomy profile: Instagram: astropunk_the_1st
